Some would say it is a representation of someone. Whenever people ask me what it is, I think it could mean a whole list of things. You might shoot someone according to the personal style you like to shoot in. Now, for models & actors, it’s easier to get into character, but shooting portraits should also be very much about the person that is sitting for you. As an artist, my job can be to shoot or portray my subject in a way that no one usually sees them in. At times, I will shoot my subject in the view of how the rest of the world sees him or her. If you really want to tell a portrait about that person, you should do thorough research about him/her, and then really think creatively what you can do to make your portrayal shine.

These are a couple quick shots I took of my friend Stephanie. She doesn’t model, but I always feel like I can see what makes each and every person special when their in front of the lens. Plus, I love shooting friends! Stephanie is on an awesome journey to Asia, where she’ll be teaching English & Art to orphans, refugees, and monks. She’ll be traveling the world, which I think is pretty awesome. I grabbed these portraits of her right before she left, and I love how a lot of them came out. Check out more of her pics here.
You can also follow her journey on her blog.
